Processor - iMac or Mac mini 2018 with a minimum quad-core processor recommended for the MacPractice Server/Data Entry for the best performance. However numerous practices do use an older Mac mini for their MacPractice Server, even though they are only dual core, and some practices use Mac Pros. FYI, industry benchmarks indicate the 7th-generation i7 Kaby Lake processor in current iMacs is faster than the Xeon processor in the current Mac Pro. And benchmarks for the 8th generation i3, i5, and i7 Kaby Lake processors in the Mac mini 2018 are even faster.
Memory (RAM) - Check Apple's support site for upgradeability for olderĀ iMacs , Mac Minis, or Mac Pros .
Calculate RAM needed on a Server/Data Entry Mac or Data Entry Mac sufficient for MacPractice plus any other software you intend to use simultaneously.
Of current Macs, only the 27" iMac and Mac Pro are upgradeable after purchase. The Mac mini 2018 is also upgradeable, by Apple.
Storage (HD/SSD) - An internal Solid State Drive (SSD) in place of a hard drive can improve application performance and make backing up faster. (Caution: Some MacPractice clients with larger data files and clients who wanted to partition have experienced problems with fusion drives on pre-2017 models).
Offices with large data files should consider a RAID system, which can be used to minimize downtime in the event of a drive failure.

The more you invest in your Mac the better performance you can expect, such as faster processor, more memory (server) and faster drive (server). If your computer is being used in a clinical area for EMR, EDR, EHR or digital imaging, consider performance. If you're going to be running another application simultaneously with MacPractice, such as Windows, Parallels, Window's application(s), browser, etc., also allot for that when selecting processor, memory and storage. When selecting a data entry Mac for MacPractice, pay particular attention to processor and video for best performance.
Although your initial investment in Macs may be greater than PCs, research resoundingly shows that your Macs will last twice as long as PCs and retain greater value, and that besides having far greater free built in security than Windows, your Macs and MacPractice will require far less IT services, saving you $1000s yearly and giving you the lowest Total Cost of Ownership.
AppleCare - We highly recommend AppleCare extended warrantees on all Apple products, entitling you to Apple's telephone and Store support, rated #1 repeatedly by JD Powers and Consumer Reports, and making your device of greater value should you sell it within the warrantee period.

*Thunderbolt 3 for Backup - as your MacPractice database grows larger, backing up takes longer. Speed your internal, automated backup with Apple's newest, faster SSD drives and your external, daily rotating backup by using Thunderbolt 3 at up to 40 gigabits per second (2X speed of Thunderbolt 2 and 4X USB 3.1), with Thunderbolt 3 SSD or hard drives. You should be able to use adaptors with these new Macs with your current backup devices, but you will have the option of purchasing optimum Thunderbolt 3 devices in the near future through MacPractice.
Thunderbolt 3 Backup Devices - MacPractice is in the process of identifying and evaluating Thunderbolt 3 devices for our clients. Locating and comparing Thunderbolt 3 device capabilities and performance is challenging. Our intention is to make that process easier, and to sell selected products at a fair, competitive price for optimum performance. The products will be listed here as we have details.
